| ABSTRACT: The use of lambs from crossing of local with specialized sheep breeds for meat production may lead to higher meat deposition and a smaller fat amount in the carcass, with a more adequate nutritional profile for human consumption. This study investigated the performance, carcass and meat characteristics of lambs from the Morada Nova and Santa Inês locally adapted hair breeds and crosses between Dorper × Morada Nova and Dorper × Santa Inês slaughtered at approximately 35 kg. | In Sula leucogaster (Boddaert, 1783) it happens a brood reduction from two to one egg. The eggs hatch asynchronously and it is rare for the second chick to survive for long. A quantify parental investment is proposed and the differences between males and females of Sula leucogaster is verified for to help to understand the brood reduction. The studies were conducted on Ilhas dos Currais, Paraná, Brazil, where a total of 140 nests were studied. Males and females shared the breeding care period. However, females invested about 8% more on incubation than males (c² = 7,37; c² critic = 3,842). Time of absence in the nest for females was larger than for males (c² = 13,9; c² critic = 3,842). | Na região Meio-Norte do Brasil, o milho tem se destacado em área cultivada entre as culturas produtoras de grãos de ciclo anual. A área colhida na safra 2013/2014 foi 1.011.400 hectares, sendo 405,0 mil no Estado do Piauí e 606,4 mil no Estado do Maranhão, com rendimento médio de grãos de 2.694 kg ha-1. O rendimento médio de grãos da região está muito aquém do potencial produtivo da espécie, que pode ser melhor explorada mediante a adoção das técnicas preconizadas que, muitas vezes, implicam em simples alterações nos sistemas de produção praticados, como exemplo a utilização de cultivares melhoradas. | Many birds in breeding seasons engage in vigorous dawn singing that often turns to a prominent chorus. We examined dawn chorus variation of avian assemblages in a tropical montane forest in Taiwan and tested the hypothesis that onset sequence is affected by eye sizes, foraging heights, and diet of birds. Chorus onset and duration varied between sampling months, but generally peaked in the prime breeding season. Overall dawn chorus length increased with, but mean duration per species was negatively correlated with, species richness. The inter-correlation among trait variables in phylogenetic independent contrasts was calculated and examined. | Establishment of germplasm banks of ornamental species, together with breeding programs is fundamental for the growth of competitive cultivars of flowers that are the same or better quality than those developed in other countries. Around 100 progenies from a crossing between the cultivars Dendrobium 'Tong Chai Gold' and Dendrobium 'Black Jack' were obtained, from 50 plants which were selected and grown in pots in greenhouse conditions to evaluate the blooming stage and to select the progenies. | The experimental unit used previously in our laboratory for the study of the effect of the photoperiod on the growth of flatfish was based on the use of tanks with separate recirculation systems. We modified it, connecting the different tanks to a single, more powerful recirculation system. | Este trabalho teve por objetivo conhecer o comportamento produtivo de variedades de mandioca, para posterior utilização nas Microrregiões Homogêneas de Boquim e do Agreste de Lagarto, no Estado de Sergipe e em áreas adjacentes. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental em blocos ao acaso, com três repetições. Na Microrregião de Boquim, as avaliações contemplaram dezoito cultivares, em duas épocas de colheita e, na Microrregião do Agreste de Lagarto, foram avaliadas dezenove cultivares, com quatro épocas de colheita. | O objetivo deste trabalho foi averiguar o comportamento de cultivares de mandioca em diferentes épocas de colheita e ambientes de produção visando atender as necessidades dos produtores de mandioca do Nordeste brasileiro., Os ensaios foram realizados no ano agrícola de 2009/2010, nos estados da Bahia, Sergipe, Pernambuco e Rio Grande do Norte. O delineamento experimental adotado nos experimentos foi o de blocos ao acaso, com três repetições, nos quais 16 cultivares de mandioca foram avaliadas. | Translatable and nontranslatable versions of the coat protein (cp) gene of a Papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) isolate collected in the state of Bahia, Brazil, were engineered for expression in Sunrise and Sunset Solo varieties of papaya (Carica papaya). The biolistic system was used to transform secondary somatic embryo cultures derived from immature zygotic embryos. Fifty-four transgenic lines, 26 translatable and 28 nontranslatable gene versions, were regenerated, with a transformation efficiency of 2.7%.
